cannot install windows vista

Cannot install Windows Vista

I have downloaded and tried to install the 32bit and 64bit versions on vista,
I have an ASUS A8N-E Motherboard with a AMD 3200 64 bit processor I threw in a Maxtor 4D040H2 40 gig IDE hard drive and set it it to boot off of that. It that had a Windows XP 32 bit installation on it, I have tried upgrading the installation and I have also tried to do a clean installation of both the 32bit and 64 bit versions.
each time I would get an error "Setup could not get information about the disk on your computer."
Any ideas?

I forgot to add I also have a 320 gig 0 raid array in my computer but I disabled it and still had the same problem.

How do you have your drives set up? Jumper settings, Setup (BIOS/CMOS)?

You need a clean NTFS partition of at least 20 (15 minimum) GB on a 7200 Rpm disk for installing Vista. Prepare that partition (format NTFS; chkdsk), start WinXP, disable on-access virus scanner, insert Vista DVD for installation - being connected to the internet for updates.
Worked fine here in three cases.

I just installed an 80 gig SATA II drive, made sure it had a clean NTFS Partition, still recieving the same error. I made sure if was finding the drive in my bios, I disabled raid in my bios and and made sure all my usb devices except for my keyboard and mouse were unplugged.

I just installed an 80 gig SATA II drive and made sure it had a clean ntfs partition on it and still had the same problem. recieved the exact same error so I am thinking it has something to do with it not getting information from my motherboard, it finds the drive in my bios. I had disabled raid and unplugged all my usb devices except for my keyboard and mouse. Noluck

I receive this error message from the Vista Upgrade Advisor although I have 50 GB of free space on my D: drive and over 100 GB on my H: drive?
We're sorry, but your PC cannot currently install and run the core experiences of Windows Vista. However, you may be able prepare your computer for Windows Vista by upgrading your PC hardware. You will need to take the following actions to run Windows Vista.
Additional hard drive storage
15GB free space required (Your computer currently has 6.70 GB) You will either need to: a) upgrade your hard drive to increase its capacity, or b) create additional free space on your existing drive by removing unwanted files. If you decide to upgrade your hard drive, we recommend 40GB capacity at minimum for premium editions of Windows Vista. Contact your PC retailer to see if an upgrade is available.

It is possible that the Upgrade Advisor is only looking at your C drive and not seeing the other ones.

It gives you the option to install to another drive/partition during setup. There isn't a way to correct what the upgrade advisor is doing as far as i know. ---------- Mark Dietz PROnetworks <http://www.pro-networks.org> http://imnuts.gotdns.org/blog/
